We specialize in treating patients experiencing pain resulting from a bulging disc or herniated disc (also referred to as a "slipped disc" or "ruptured disc.")

Causes and Symptoms of a Bulging Disc

Spinal disc herniation Tracy ChiropractorBulging discs are common in both adults and seniors. Often, a "bulging disc" or a "herniated disc" is the result of aging-related wear and tear known as disc degeneration. As we age, our spinal discs lose water content and become less flexible and prone to rupturing or tearing with a twist or minor strain. Falls, blows to the head and lifting large, heavy objects can also cause a disc to herniate.

Some people have a herniated disc and have no symptoms of a disc problem. But, the most common symptoms include:

  • Leg pain
  • Arm pain
  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Muscle weakness

If you have a herniated disc in the lumbar area, often pain is felt in the calf, thigh and buttocks. With a herniated cervical disc, pain will typically occur in the arm and shoulder. People who have a herniated disc often experience tingling or numbness in areas of the affected nerves. And the muscles served by the affected nerves tend to weaken, reducing the ability to lift items and maintain balance.

Risk Factors for a Herniated Disc

Factors that increase the risk of a herniated disc include weight, occupation and genetics. Excess body weight puts extra stress on the body’s discs. Those with physically demanding jobs also have a greater risk of herniated disc. Repetitive pushing, twisting, lifting and pulling can cause a herniated disc. And some folks inherit a predisposition to developing a herniated disc.
