Whiplash Treatment and Pain Relief

About Whiplash

Whiplash is a neck injury that can cause pain, stiffness, numbness and other debilitating symptoms in your neck, back and arms. Whiplash is the result of a sudden backward or forward jerking motion of your head, which commonly occurs in car accidents. This abrupt action can damage structures in the spinal column, including joints, muscles, discs, ligaments and nerves. The whiplash action strains, tears, and stretches these structures beyond their normal limits. The damage causes a variety of symptoms commonly associated with whiplash that can interfere with the quality of your life.

Symptoms of whiplash may not develop for 24 hours or more after the injury. If you are like many people with whiplash, however, you may develop a variety of symptoms days after the trauma. Symptoms of whiplash include neck pain and stiffness, headaches or dizziness, pain in your shoulders or between your shoulder blades, numbness in your arm or hand, and low back pain. Whiplash may also cause fatigue, memory and concentration problems, and irritability. Sometimes people experience abnormal sensations such as burning or prickling after a whiplash injury. These whiplash symptoms can cause disability during the day and disturb sleep at night.

One of the most debilitating symptoms of whiplash is muscle spasms that send paralyzing pain into your neck, arms, shoulders, and back. Spasms cause muscles to become very contracted and tight. These muscle spasms increase the degree of daytime disability and nighttime sleep disturbances.

Symptoms usually clear up quickly – most patients recover within three months – but some whiplash patients experience symptoms for many more months or even years.

In the past, doctors would immobilize your neck with a stiff and cumbersome cervical collar that became the uniform of the whiplash patient. Today’s physicians now recommend early movement of the neck instead of immobilization for weeks on end; temporary immobilization for only two to three weeks may help in some cases. Pain relievers, such as ibuprofen and naproxen products, along with gentle exercises, alternating heat and ice, physical therapy, chiropractic care, and massage ease pain, numbness and other symptoms of whiplash.
